Iceland 14: More from Seydisfjordur

We picked up some provisions from a supermarket and then headed further east along the shore of the coast.  This was a gravel road which started off quite smooth, but soon became rather bumpy.  We went past a couple of gun emplacements and what looked like a WWII landing strip, but this has yet to be confirmed.  We eventually reached the end of the road (for our vehicle anyway, as 4x4s were allowed to go further).

Cue a picnic lunch among the heather, harebells, orchids and blueberries while being dive-bombed by a pair of Arctic Terns whenever we moved.  There were other birds too: Golden Plover, Whimbrel, Black-tailed Godwit, Pigeon, Fulmar, Kittiwake and - by far the most numerous - Eider.

Away from the cantankerous terns, we spent some time looking at the plants which were growing among the lava.  By this time it was over 20 degrees with a gentle breeze, and absolutely beautiful.

We then had to drive back to Seydisfjordur across the snowy pass and beside a frozen river.  This time we stopped to take pictures and simply to enjoy the peace and breathtaking beauty of the place.

Look out for the next exciting episode when our intrepid explorers head South along the shoreline of the Eastern Fjords towards Djupivogur.
